Mansoor achieves 24th spot in world rankings


KARACHI, Dec 7: After good showing in the recently-concluded Pakistan Open, national squash players improved their world rankings, announced for this month with country's top player Mansoor Zaman securing the 24th spot in the latest line-up.

According to the world rankings made available here on Thursday, national champion Mansoor Zaman who reached the semi-finals of last month’s Pakistan Open, jumped five places from his previous spot of 29 to achieve his highest ranking in 2006.

Aamir Atlas, a 16-year-old, continued his giant strides at the international arena when the promising player climbing six places further to confirm his career best ranking of 38.

Former national champion Shahid Zaman secured the 31st position to become the third countryman having place inside the top-50 club.

Shamsul Islam Khan 70 (up 46 places), Majid Khan 72 (up 37), Khayal Mohammad 75 (up 3), Farhan Mahboob 82 (up 32) and Arshad Iqbal Burki (up 17) were the other national players, improving their positions to remain among the top 100.

Meanwhile, France's Gregory Gaultier has moved up to a career-high fourth place in the new rankings. With compatriot Thierry Lincou at three, two Frenchmen have appeared in the top four world rankings for the first time.

Egypt's Amr Shabana maintains his lead at the top of the rankings, celebrating his ninth month in a row as world’s top player. But his teenaged compatriot Ramy Ashour is making rapid progress, rising a further two places to a best-ever No.7.

The squash hierarchy in England has also undergone a change in the new list, in which Nick Matthew has risen two places to a career-best-equalling No.5.

Victory in November’s Coastal Contacts Jericho Open in Canada has helped England’s Peter Barker move up to a career-high No.19.
