Farmers demand relief

Published December 8, 2006

OKARA, Dec 7: Crops on hundreds of acres of land have damaged badly due to the breach that had occurred some 10 days ago in the Lower Bari Doab Canal. Union council nazim Mian Ghulam Mustafa said that the poor farmers of about eight villages — Moza Kamman, Qilli Jamel Singh, Thatta Chaddaran, Thatta Khokharan, Sakhi Abdal, Ram Zakheera, Islampura and Khokhar Pul - were badly affected. He said that the affected villages were under two-feet water after the breach in the LBDC at the Khokhar Kothi point, destroying peddy, maize, sugarcane and other crops.

He said the accumulated water had also caused a delay in the sowing of wheat crop. — Correspondent
