HYDERABAD: Police chief visits disputed plot: Construction likely to stir resistance
By Our Correspondent
HYDERABAD, Dec 7: Provincial Police Officer (Sindh) Jehangir Mirza on Thursday visited the proposed site for the construction of a complex comprising housing scheme for police personnel and an auditorium in Qasimabad taluka.
The site is in the possession of the police department but it is also claimed by the residents of Mohammad Khan Shoro village, who insist that it is an amenity plot. They have suggested shifting of the police complex project to an alternative site in nearby Ganju Takkar area.
The DIG, operation, Hyderabad, Mazhar Ali Sheikh, and the executive engineer briefed the PPO about the proposed project.
The police department is set to begin construction on the complex from Saturday, an act which may stir a reaction from the villagers, backed by the Qasimabad taluka nazim.
To settle the issue, a member of the chief minister’s inspection team, Manzur Awan, had visited the site on December 1, met with a number of people in Qasimabad taluka and sought their views on the status of the land.
The police claim that the then Sindh IGP had paid Rs200,000 to the revenue department in 1973 by way of a cheque but the land was not entered in the form-VII for one or the other reason. The price of 50-acres land at that time was estimated at Rs3,500 per acre. It involves survey numbers 8, 9, 10, 12 and 353.
The villagers had told Mr Awan that one of the survey numbers of the land claimed by the police department belonged to Mohammad Khan Shoro village and it was an amenity plot.
The chief minister’s inspection team member also met Taluka Nazim Noor Mohammad Shoro, police and revenue officials and proprietor of a housing scheme.
The nazim strongly disputed police claim that the land belonged to their department and said that police did pay Rs200,000 to the revenue department but the then DIG and SSP had later withdrawn the amount and decided to build the complex on Ganju Takkar hills.
He said that one of the survey numbers out of the 50 acres of land belonged to the village and it was adjacent to another amenity plot reserved for a playground.
He produced copies of sketches, other documents and map of the land before Mr Awan.
