Joint team to probe Peshawar incident

ISLAMABAD, Dec 6: Interior Minister Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao on Wednesday said a joint investigation team was being set up by the federal and provincial governments to probe into the incident of alleged recovery of some explosive from an intelligence official in Peshawar.“The incident is result of misunderstanding,” Mr Sherpao said at a press conference here. He said the NWFP chief minister should not have reacted in this fashion and that the stance of the Intelligence Bureau be considered in this respect.

“Our intelligence agencies have done remarkably well in the fight against terror and have set precedents,” the minister said.

He called upon the NWFP chief minister to avoid taking political benefits out of the incident and concentrate on improving law and order situation in the province. “I think the NWFP government has overreacted to the incident,” he added.—APP

Our Peshawar bureau adds: Expressing grave concern over what he called an offence against the province, NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani has said that all those involved in planting explosive at his Peshawar secretariat would be given exemplary punishment.

He said this while speaking as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the newly-constructed building of the provincial assembly here on Wednesday.

He also criticised the apathy of electronic as well as print media regarding his press conference about the incident, saying that small news items got a wide publicity in the media whereas news of international importance was totally played down.
