GUJRANWALA Dec 6: Captors released the two doctors who were kidnapped from Awan Chowk on December 2 after their heirs paid a Rs5 million ransom for their release. Unidentified people had kidnapped Dr Abdul Latif and Dr Abdul Aziz, both neighbors of each other in WAPDA Town, and demanded ransom for their release.
Zahid Aziz, the son of Dr Abdul Aziz, delivered the ransom to the captors in Machikey village, Sheikhupura district, on December 5, but they did not release the doctors on the same day. On Wednesday, the captors released them near Shahdra on GT Road and fled. Sabzi Mandi Police Station have registered a case.
NUMBER PLATES: The excise and taxation department will issue computerised registration number to vehicles from next year.
Motor Registration Authority head Syed Iqtidar Shah said at a briefing here on Wednesday that cars and motorcycles would be registered under different serials.
He revealed that registration of vehicles from 1940 to 1977 was nominal and only 10,000 vehicles were registered during 37 years. But from Z A Bhutto regime and onwards the registration of vehicles increased and around 289,971 were registered in 29 years.
He said 95 per cent registration numbers were being allotted to motorcycles while remaining five per cent to other vehicles.
He said former president Gen Ziaul Haq registered his vehicle here and got number GAD-786. His foreign minister Gohar Ayub Khan got GAK-1 for his car as it was initials of his name. Mr Shah said attractive numbers of various serials could not be allotted to anybody so far due to low bid in auction.
KILLED: Two people, including a taxi driver, were killed in fog related accident on GT Road near Mandiala Warraich on Wednesday.
Muhammad Akhtar of Kot Inayat Khan was returning after dropping one of his relatives at the Lahore airport by a rented Suzuki. The cab collided with a coaster due to fog and speeding as a result of which Akhtar and driver Pervaiz Ahmad of Gakhar were killed on the spot.
Police removed the bodies for autopsy. The taxi driver was the father of four minor children.
