TOBA TEK SINGH, Dec 6: Crops on hundreds of acres of farmland were inundated when a 40-feet breach occurred in Jhang Branch Canal on Wednesday.

This was the second breach that had happened in the district within 24 hours after the first one was reported in Jakhar Minor Canal near Kamalia on Tuesday.

Initially, the breach was 30-feet but it widened to 40-feet near Chak 387-JB (Allahar) and it could not be plugged till the filing of this report.

Irrigation staff and farmers were busy plugging the breach under the supervision of DCO Nawazish Ali. Meanwhile, executive engineers, Jhang and Gogera canals, have ordered a probe into causes of breaches.

ARRESTED: Carrying out a local court’s orders, Gojra police arrested a government contractor for issuing a bogus cheque of Rs700,000 to a complainant.

According to the FIR, accused Saleem of Faisalabad had borrowed the amount from Rana Altaf of Chak 97-JB and issued him the cheque the bank did not honour.
