Chinese national held on rape charge

By Our Reporter

LAHORE, Dec 6: Police on Wednesday arrested a Chinese on charges of raping and defrauding his fellow national. A case had been earlier registered on Tuesday under Hudood Ordinance (10 7/79) and section 406 (fraud) against the accused, Chau San Jain.

According to the FIR registered with Ghalib Market police, the alleged victim, Ayan Mashu Shay, 25, stated that she reached Islamabad from China on Nov 29 for tourism purpose and approached her host Chau San Jain, also a Chinese.

Shay, who only knew her national language and was lodged at a hotel near city railway station, said she was assured that besides tourism opportunities she would also be getting a job in Pakistan.

“Jain took my passport, $200 dollars and 1,700 Chinese yuan as a guarantee and then we reached Indus Hotel, where the accused, along with his accomplices, raped me,” Shay told the police. On Dec 4, the accused took her to Qasimpura, Lahore Cantonment, and again raped her, she added.

“I managed to escape from the area and met a Pakistani, Tahir Mushtaq son of Mushtaq Ahmed, who also knew the Chinese language. He, after listening to my story, took me to Ghalib Market police station,” she stated in the FIR.

According to police sources, the accused and the victim refused to bear cost of the DNA tests, saying they had no money for these.

The Punjab government had ordered the DNA tests, costing Rs10,000 per person, the sources said.

Model Town SP (investigation) Azmat Ullah Gondal told Dawn that the rape allegations were not proved yet as the medical report of the girl was still `unclear’, while the accused would also be medically examined on Thursday (today).

He said the Hudood Ordinance would not apply to the accused for being a non-Muslim even if allegations were proved, adding that if any Pakistani was, however, found involved in the crime, he would be indicted under the Hudood law.

The SP said during the initial interrogation, the accused had neither accepted rape charges nor revealed names of his accomplices.

He said the victim was in contact with the Chinese embassy and was staying at Qasimpura.
