PESHAWAR, Dec 6: NWFP Governor Ali Mohammad Jan Aurakzai has underlined the need for a comprehensive plan for wildlife protection and has said the relevant law will be extended to the tribal areas to achieve the desired results.

Speaking at a presentation on wildlife conservation in the NWFP and Fata, given by chief conservator Mumtaz Malik at the Governor’s House here on Wednesday, Mr Aurakzai spoke of the importance of community participation in wildlife protection.

He said a media campaign should be launched to create awareness among the masses about wildlife preservation. “The local population should be given incentives in order to motivate them for taking part in such a campaign,” he said.

He said the tribal areas were rich in flora and fauna. The belt was a habitat for a number of rare wildlife species.

The chief conservator said some rare wildlife species were available in the NWFP and Fata. The NWFP had the world’s largest population of Kashmir Markhor and western Tragopan pheasants.

He said, the NWFP had four sub-species of Markhor. Five national parks, three wildlife sanctuaries and 36 game reserves formed a part of the protected areas, he said.
