KARACHI, Dec 4: City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal on Monday issued directives to all town nazims, KWSB staffers and fire brigade department to make arrangements for draining out rainwater from streets and roads where proper storm water drainage system was not available.
The nazim visited various parts of the city after heavy rainfall especially those areas from where he had received complaints of stagnant rainwater.
During his visit, Mr Kamal also contacted Adviser to Chief Minister on Home Affairs Waseem Akhtar and sought his help to resume the smooth flow of traffic during heavy downpour.
Mr Kamal requested Mr Akhtar to send regular police force for helping the traffic police on emergency basis.
A city government spokesman said after getting the help of regular police force to remove congestion the situation on major city roads came under control. The concerned staffs of the city government, town administrations and water board were on the streets to supervise the operation.
Mustafa Kamal hoped that the stagnant rainwater would be drained in least possible time provided no further rains hit the metropolis.
He said the areas which were deprived of proper drainage system in the past would be provided with the facility soon as a comprehensive plan had been prepared in this regard.
Meanwhile, the works and services department, KWSB, and fire brigade installed water pumping machines in the low-lying areas. The pumping machines were also installed at Teen Talwar and other parts of Clifton, I.I. Chnudrigar Road, M.A. Jinnah Road, University Road and Sharea Faisal.
The spokesman said under construction underpasses in Liaquatabad, Gharibabad and Nazimabad of one side had already been opened for vehicular traffic, while the second track of the Nazimabad Underpass had temporarily been opened to facilitate the commuters in emergency situation.
According to the spokesman, the rain did not affect the underpasses. Some rainwater had accumulated in Gharibabad and Liaquatabad underpasses which was immediately drained out by the machines already installed there, said the spokesman.
