Steps urged for road safety

Published December 3, 2006

HYDERABAD, Dec 2: The director-general of the National Highway Authority, Aijaz Ali Khan, has said that if road accidents were not controlled then Pakistan would stand at number three in the world among countries having maximum rate of road casualties.

Speaking at a training workshop of engineers on “construction of roads and accidents” on Saturday, he said that road casualties had become a daily routine in the country. He said that in 1990, Pakistan stood at number nine among countries with the highest number of road accidents.

He said that if the situation was not controlled then the country would stand at number three in the list. He said that in most of the cases road accidents were result of wrong driving, intoxication by drivers and below par construction of roads.

He said that every year 5,000 people lost their lives in the country and twenty per cent of the deceased were children. He said that the government was working on a project to impart training to school teachers and students how to cross roads.
