KARACHI: Khuhro accuses govt of sabotaging session

KARACHI, Dec 1: Leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly Nisar Ahmed Khuhro has condemned the chief minister, ministers and other treasury members for their aggressive attitude, and accused them of sabotaging the requisitioned session. He claimed that the prorogation order for the Friday session had been signed even before its commencement.
Talking to newsmen in his chamber in the assembly building after the session was prorogued, Mr Khuhro argued that how could the Speaker, Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah, sign the order while he was not in the town on Friday.
He said the opposition wanted to raise the issues of the arrest of MMA leaders and workers; tear-gassing and baton charge to foil MMA march from Lahore to Gujarat; and registration of false cases against MMA leaders in Hyderabad. Waving a copy of the prorogation order, Mr Khuhro claimed that the speaker had signed it in advance and this was a solid proof that the treasury benches had decided to run away from any discussion on the pressing issues of public concern for which the opposition had requisitioned the session.
He said the opposition had submitted 30 adjournment motions and 76 resolutions, besides proposing an amendment to the rules of business. He pointed out that his motion on Sindh’s compensation claim vis-à-vis losses owing to curtailed share in irrigation water had also been listed in the day’s order.
Mr Khuhro pointed out that only four days back, the Sindh government representatives had given the ‘concept clearance’ of Kalabagh Dam which tantamount to agreeing in principle to the project. This matter was also to be taken up in the session, he added.
Yet another issue the opposition wanted to raise the house was of the recruitment of 700 doctors, on the basis of their domicile, who had cleared the Sindh Public Service Commission examination. He said that according to his information, some 140 such doctors were currently engaged in higher studies in MRCP and FCPS and if they were posted somewhere away from their place of education, they would have to give up their higher education.
In reply to a question, Mr Khuhro said had the allowed Nasrullah Shaji to speak on his point of order for five minutes and the treasury benches had refrained from creating disorder, there would not have been a rumpus in the house.
Abdul Rehman Rajput of MMA told newsmen that the government had resorted to sabotaging their protest in the house by getting the session prorogued.
