Kasuri’s remarks on Nato distorted: FO

ISLAMABAD, Nov 30: Foreign Office on Thursday clarified remarks ascribed to Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri about the Taliban winning the war in Afghanistan and Nato losing it.

“The foreign minister’s comments have been distorted and misrepresented,” said the FO spokesperson about the remarks attributed to him by the Daily Telegraph and which were quoted in a local daily on Thursday.

“The foreign minister neither said that the Taliban were winning the war in Afghanistan and Nato was bound to fail nor has he advised any country against sending more troops,” she asserted, adding: “The foreign minister had only reiterated what Pakistan has been stressing all along -- the need for a comprehensive strategy.”

The spokesperson said the minister had emphasised that military approach alone would not resolve the problem in Afghanistan and it ought to be combined with political as well as economic approach. “The international community must encourage national reconciliation and undertake an extensive reconstruction programme for South and Southeast Afghanistan in addition to what is being done for the rest of Afghanistan and address the problem of narcotics,” the spokesperson said.—Q.A.
