Police ‘side with’ murder accused

GUJRAT, Nov 30: Investigators belonging to Gujrat Saddar police station are allegedly siding with the influential people accused of torturing a youth to death over a minor dispute in Kathala village some two months ago.

Irfan, a brother of the deceased, Imran, told Dawn on Thursday that the influential accused first subjected Imran to severe torture and then shot him dead.

He said that he got registered a case initially against Amir, Imran Rafiq and Naveed, later nominating Rafiq and Lateef in the supplementary FIR for inciting the `killers’ to murder Irfan.

He alleged that the police were siding with the four accused after accepting a huge bribe from them. Despite mentioning the arrest of the accused in papers, the police set them free, he said.

He said that on his complaint, the range DIG had directed the investigators to conduct an impartial probe into the matter, but to no avail. He demanded that Punjab IGP should order stern action against the accused and the ‘corrupt’ policemen.
