66.16pc pass matric supplementary exam

GUJRANWALA, Nov 28: The Gujranwala Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) on Tuesday announced the result of matriculation supplementary examination, 2006 here.

During a press conference at his office, board chairman Masudul Haq said as many as 13,157 candidates appeared in the exam. Of them, 7,258 were declared successful with 66.16 pass percentage. He said the number of science group candidates was 3,794 and general group 9,363 while 2,188 and 5,070 of them got through with 57.67 and 54.14 pass percentages, respectively.

The BISE chief said there was no case of RL (result late) or SN (second notification) pending in the result.

He said certificates had been issued to almost all candidates who had passed their matric or intermediate examinations in 2005. Those who passed their examination in 2006 would be issued certificates till Dec 31 this year.

He said one-window operation of the board was being upgraded where candidates could receive their certificates and duplicate roll number slips of NOCs within an hour.

Mr Haq said the Punjab educational boards were exchanging 50 per cent of their papers for marking to ensure transparency while uniform papers for all boards would be prepared in future by a central board which was being set up in Lahore.

“Now the higher education department has allowed the boards to exchange all papers for marking in 2007.”

Controller (examination) Dr Mumtaz Ahmad Awan and other senior officers were also present on the occasion.

SPEECH CONTEST: An all Pakistan inter-collegiate speech competition was held at Quaid-i-Azam public college here on Tuesday.

Students from various schools and colleges across the country participated in the contest.

District Coordination Officer Manzer Hayat was the chief guest. According to the result, Syed Khurram Sajad of FC College, Lahore stood first in Urdu speech while Syed Muhammad Asad Ghafran of a Muridke school and Haider Sultan of Jhelum Military College Jhelum bagged second and third positions, respectively.

Similarly in the English speech, Haseeb Zahid of Jhelum Military College obtained first position, Mian Sarfraz of Government College University, Lahore second and Muhammad Ahmad Khan of Murree Army Public School third position. The Jhelum Military College team got overall first position and won the trophy.

PROTEST CONTINUES: Sanitary workers continued their protest on Tuesday on the fifth consecutive day against non-payment of their three-month salaries by the City District Government Gujranwala.

The protesters, led by union leaders Naseeruddin Humayun Malik and Mian Ataur Rehman, marched along GT Road and in front of the office of district nazim Fiaz Ahmad Chattha, chanting slogans against the CDGG.

They threatened that they would set up a hunger camp along with their children outside the district nazim’s office if their salaries were not paid within the next two days. Sanitary workers said they could not continue education of their children owing to non-payment of fee as the schools administration had struck off their names.

Meanwhile, the Khiali Town administration has finalised salary bills of its sanitary workers and claimed that payment would be started from Thursday (tomorrow).
