KARACHI: Bank robbers get life

KARACHI, Nov 28: The additional district and sessions judge, South, Sher Bano Karim, sentenced on Tuesday three bank robbers to suffer rigorous imprisonment for life.

The judge also imposed a fine of Rs50,000 each on Tahir alias Hanif Chikna, Ali Asghar and Nisar. She ordered that the defaulter on the payment would have to undergo six month additional.

The convicts had looted Rs8.49 million from the Timber Market branch of the Muslim Commercial Bank on December 10, 2001. All the three were guards in a private security company.

RANSOM CASE: An anti-terrorism court put off the hearing of a kidnapping for ransom case against two accused after recording the statement of the prime accused person’s mother, who appeared as defence witness.

The case pertained to the kidnapping of an American-Pakistani businessman, Najmul Tariq, and the victim’s paternal nephew and a head constable are being prosecuted in the case.

Judge Haq Nawaz Baloch of the ATC-5 fixed November 30 for the next hearing after the deposition of Adeel Mansoor’s mother Zahida Mansoor, who was also cross-examined by special public prosecutor Mazhar Qayyum.

The victim’s real paternal nephew, Adeel Mansoor, and a head constable, Khateebur Rehman, are being tried in the case while Syed Saeed Umer and Arsalan have been declared absconders.

The woman said her son, Adeel, was not in the city at the time of incident and police implicated him in the case.

MURDER CASE: Judge Ghulam Ali A. Samtio of ATC-1 put off the hearing of a kidnapping for ransom and murder case of a five-year-old girl.

The judge fixed December 1 for the next hearing after the depositions of Inspector Fida Hussain and Head Constable Raees Ahmed, who were also cross-examined by defence counsel Raja Ameer Mohammed.

Laiba was allegedly kidnapped for ransom and subsequently murdered in the limits of North Nazimabad by one of her relatives, namely Asadullah.

Inspector Fida Hussain submitted that the Anti-Violent Crime Cell and Citizen-Police Liaison Committee had tracked down the accused through his cellular phone number. He said he was with the police party which had raided the house of the accused and recovered Rs300,000 from him.
