Retired drivers to run trains

By Zaheer Mahmood Siddiqui

LAHORE, Nov 27: Drivers re-employed on contract basis after attaining superannuation, will be running most of the major trains, the railways authorities have decided.

Sources said on Monday that the decision had been taken by the railways administration to counter the locomotive drivers' ongoing `go-slow' move that is delaying trains’ arrivals and departures at all major stations.

About 100 locomotive drivers were re-employed after their retirement on contract basis by the railways authorities during the past couple of months to meet the shortage of skilled manpower for running freight and branch line passenger trains.

An official said only those contractual drivers had been switched over to major trains who had been declared fit by the organisation's health department.
