KARACHI: Constable shot dead in Azizabad

KARACHI, Nov 26: A constable was shot dead by unknown persons in Azizabad early on Sunday morning. The assailants took away his official gun, police said.

Azizabad DSP Ejaz Hashmi said Syed Khalid Ahmed, 35, and his associate Constable Fayyaz had done on duty assigned at the People’s Stadium in connection with an Ideas 2006 programme on Saturday evening.

They returned from their duty at around 4am and stopped at the Bhaijan Chowk, where Fayyaz got down at a hotel while Khaild went ahead to buy cigarettes.

Quoting Fayyaz, DSP Hashmi said some people came running to Fayyaz informing him of the incident that some motorcyclists had shot at Khalid.

The victim was rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital but he died on the way to the hospital, police said.

Khaild suffered a bullet in the chest, the DSP said, adding that the assailants also took away his SMG. Quoting some people, police said the assailants were wearing helmets.

The victim had 16-year police service to his credit and was quite popular in Joharabad where he had been posted for last several years, DSP Hashmi said.

He had six children and lived in Bufferzone. He was buried in the Sakhi Hasan graveyard. The city police chief and other police officers attended his burial.

ACCIDENTS: An employee of the city government was killed in a road accident at the Jail Chowrangi on Sunday.

Police said Muhammad Shafeeq was driving his pickup truck (JL-0977) when the vehicle was hit by a speeding lorry at the intersection.

Police said that Shafeeq died on the spot while his two associates, Rashid and Mehboob, were injured in the accident. Police said the errant lorry driver escaped .

An unidentified woman died in a road accident on Shahrah-i-Liaquat.

Police said an unidentified woman in her mid-40s was knocked down by a speeding bus of route 4-L. The victim was taken to the Civil Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police claimed to have arrested the driver, Shahid Khan.

In another accident, an unidentified man died in a hit-and-run accident on the Super Highway.

Police said the accident occurred near the new Sabzi Mandi. Police shifted the body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for legal formalities.
