Lethal gas: hospital admits deaths

Published November 26, 2006

LAHORE, Nov 25: The Services Hospital administration on Saturday admitted that two women died at the facility a few days back when they were administered poisonous gas during anesthesia process. Three children have also been affected.

Services Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Ijaz Husain Bhatti told Dawn that it had been confirmed that Bashiran Bibi, 55, and Sadaf, 18, died when they were administered poisonous gas during anesthesia process.

However, the condition of the three children, who were also affected by the gas, was stable, he said.

He said a private company which supplied the gas for anesthesia to the hospital was apparently responsible for the incident. He said the sad incident took place as only one cylinder had poisonous gas and the doctors had no idea about it while administering it to the patients.

Dr Bhatti said action would be initiated in the light of inquiry committee’s findings.
