ISLAMABAD, Nov 24: The board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Thursday approved an agreement with Pakistan for application of safeguards on the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit-2 (Chasnupp-2).
This was announced by Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam in a statement issued on Friday. “The approval is ... a recognition of Pakistan’s non-proliferation commitments,” she said.
The spokesperson pointed out that Pakistan had already placed under the Agency's safeguards two research reactors and two nuclear power plants.
Pakistan is one of the only three non-NPT member states that enjoy the right of concluding such an agreement, she said, adding: “The approval of the agreement also signifies the differentiated nature of the IAEA’s safeguards system.”—Q.A
