ISLAMABAD, Nov 24: Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday declared Pakistan as an `indispensable partner’ for cooperation in the international arena and called for strengthening such collaboration to uphold common interests.

In his televised address to the Pakistani nation from the Convention Centre, President Hu said: “China will continue to work with Pakistan to uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the collective interests of the developing countries and promote democracy in international relations.”

He advocated a greater role for Pakistan in the world affairs, saying its international standing was rising steadily both in Asia and beyond.

“As a true friend of Pakistan, China hopes that Pakistan will play a greater role in regional and international affairs and (China) will strengthen coordination and cooperation with Pakistan in the Asean Regional Forum, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, Asian Cooperation Dialogue, Asia Europe Meeting and other regional organisation,” President Hu said.

He noted that Pakistan was actively involved in regional and international affairs and was committed to upholding peace in Asia.

He said China would remain a champion of peace, development and cooperation and continue to pursue an independent foreign policy of peace. “China’s development is peaceful, open and cooperative in nature. It will not pose threat to anyone.”

President Hu’s moving address drew several rounds of applause from audience. He was given a standing ovation both at the outset and at the end of his address.

Notably, he made no reference to extremism and terrorism. Instead he talked about peace, moderation and harmony among civilisations.President Hu, who said he was touched by the “outpouring of brotherly affection” of the Pakistani people, said: “One should not make irresponsible remarks about internal affairs of other countries simply because of differences any countries have and it is equally wrong to blame a particular civilisation, nation or religion for some problem or conflict in the world.”

“We are truly good neighbours, close friends, trusted partners and dear brothers and sisters,” he declared.

Mr Hu proposed steps for consolidating friendship. He underlined the need for close contacts between governments, leaders, legislatures, political parties and civic organisations of the two countries and to maintain regular consultation on major issues of mutual concern through bilateral mechanisms in strategic, economic, technological, security and defence fields.

He invited 500 young people from Pakistan to visit China in the next five years. He also called for expanding air and land links.

Mr Hu expressed gratitude for the valuable support Pakistan had extended to China at critical junctures in its history.

His address ended on the note: “Let us work unremittingly to strengthen China-Pakistan strategic partnership and build a harmonious world of enduring peace and common prosperity. May China and Pakistan enjoy eternal friendship.”

President Musharraf conferred Nishan-i-Pakistan award on President Hu in recognition of his visionary leadership and contribution for strengthening Pakistan-China relations.
