ABBOTTABAD, Nov 23: NWFP’s Secretary Education and Literacy Shafiullah Khan has said that an education and management research academy will be established in the province, and linked with foreign universities to improve the skill of teachers.
He was speaking at the opening session of a workshop on Provincial Education Assessment Centre (Peace) at the Regional Institute for Teachers Education on Thursday.
The workshop was attended by chairmen of all Education Boards in the NWFP, education experts from different provinces and officials of the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Education Assessment System.
“In order to improve the quality of education in the NWFP, the provincial government has decided to bring in some drastic changes. Teaching and management cadre will be introduced in the province and all private educational institutions will be brought under one umbrella to monitor their fee structure and mode of appointment,” said the secretary education.
He also hinted at some relief to private schools and colleges through the abolition of some taxes.
He said district governments in the province were being asked to set their priorities and spend all the funds provided by the government or donor agencies.
Mr Khan said the skills of teachers would also be improved through training.
Earlier, Director of Peace Zulfiqar Khan, his deputy Zafar Arbab Abbasi, Dr Saeed Anwar from Hazara University and Dr Iffat Hussain Ara from Peshawar University also spoke.
Assessment report of the provincial education department was also presented and discussed on the occasion.
POLICE INVESTIGATION: Inspector-General of Police in NWFP Riffat Pasha has asked the police force to overhaul the traditional techniques of investigation and follow the latest techniques.
“Often, due to minor flaws in investigation, justice is denied to the accused,” he said while speaking at the inaugural session of a three-day workshop titled ‘Police Investigation’ organised by Hazara Police at the District Council Hall here on Thursday.
The workshop was attended by police personnel from Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Battagram and Kohistan, as well as the newly-recruited ASPs from the Police Academy and Islamabad.
Mr Pasha said efforts were being made for changing ‘Thaana Culture’ after the introduction of police order 2002.
He stressed the need for better use of jirga system so as to settle cases in the shortest possible time.
“Police investigation plays a vital role in keeping society free of crimes, but when justice is denied due to faulty investigation, it causes violence in society,” he said.
Earlier in his welcome address, DIG Hazara Zulfiqar Qureshi briefed the participants about the salient features of the workshop and said all was being done for improving police service.
He said seasoned police officers, prominent lawyers and people from different walks of life will present their papers on how to improve the professional skill of the police force.
