Contractual lecturers threaten strike from 27th

RAWALPINDI, Nov 22: Contractual lecturers in eight degree colleges for girls in the city have said they will go on a strike from November 27 against non-renewal of their contracts.

They said they had not been paid salaries for the last three months.

The contracts of 100 lecturers in the government degree colleges at Muslim Town, Dhoke Ratta, Dhoke Hassu, Dhoke Elahi Bakhsh, Mohanpura, F-Block and B-Block of Satellite Town, and Zafarul Haq Road ended on August 31. Since then they have been teaching without getting salary.

These teachers were appointed by the provincial government on a three-year contract in 1998 that was extended from time to time.

The executive district officer education sent a summary for the extension of the lecturers’ contracts to the provincial education department on August 9, but so far they have not been granted extension. Talking to Dawn, Punjab Lecturers and Professors Association’s Rawalpindi chapter president Mohammad Ilyas Qureshi said the grievances of the lecturers had not been redressed and they would begin the strike as planned.— A Reporter
