Improvement in district monitoring committees’ work urged

HYDERABAD, Nov 16: Members of the district council on Thursday emphasised the need for making monitoring committees effective to improve efficiency of the district government.
They said that education needed proper attention of the district government and officials concerned.
The session was adjourned till Saturday after adopting six months report of the education committee.
Convenor Zafar Rajput presided over the meeting.
Education Committee Chairman Yousuf Mukhtiar said that they submitted the observations to the district nazim, who later suspended around 200 teachers, most of them ghost.
He said that measures against teachers led to improvement in attendance of teachers.
He said that the district nazim also ordered provision of furniture in schools, facilities of water supply, setting up of laboratories and construction of school buildings. He said that more members could be inducted in the committee.
Mohammad Ashraf, Mohammad Aslam and Mohammad Ehsan appreciated efforts of the district government for provision of facilities in schools and committee did a great job by discovering ghost school teachers.
They said that even education officials were unaware of the school which was converted into a poultry farm.
Ms Sajida Baloch said a primary school in Allah Bux Brohi village remained locked while 150 students turned up daily.
She said that the head-master himself turned up at 11.3am and three teachers remained absent permanently and added that even residents of village were not aware of name of the school’s ghost watchman.
It was argued by Rozina Fasahat that supervising staff of teachers should also be taken to task for slackness because they failed to ensure check and balance on teachers.
"The academic year is about to end and examinations will be held next year by April or May but formal education is yet to complete for want of availability of free books", she said.
Q. Mohammad Hakim underlined importance of effectiveness of monitoring committees in bringing improvement in different district government’s departments.
He asked critics of the district government to judge its performance in a short period and said major budget allocations were diverted to the education department for setting up of computer and science laboratories which were non-existent until now.He said that previously monitoring committees were never allowed to work independently.
“I admit that 100 per cent improvement has not been made but working of monitoring committees needs to be made more effective", he said.
He said that the district monitoring committee should coordinate with the UC level monitoring committee and their interaction was bound to give good results. Mehboob Abro welcomed report of the monitoring committee and said that it was still incomplete.
He said that there were misappropriation in education matters while three Sindhi medium schools had been closed in Latifabad and one school in Hadinagar did not have furniture.
He said that the monitoring committee of UC should also be taken on board by the district level committee.
Dr Arif Razmi urged government teachers to be conscientious about their responsibilities because they earn more than private schools teachers.
He said that the district government was giving scholarships and free books in institutions and it was also expected of teachers to show some improvement in their conduct.
Rafiq Malik said that despite directive by the district nazim teachers were not ready to work in school adding that educational officials were neglecting directives of the district nazim to malign the district government.
The convenor proposed to the federal government on a resolution of Shafqat Shah to review its decision about ban on transmission of global TV channel, Sindh TV.
