KARACHI, Nov 15: Pakistan's former world amateur champion Mohammad Yousuf added another feather in his cap when he won the Masters’ event of the World snooker championship at Jordan’s capital Amman on Tuesday.

He beat Glen Wilkinson of Australia 5-4 in a tough contested final. The score was 45-72, 53-63, 51-42, 87-14, 0-74, 38-67, 106-12, 61-31, 61-24.

The seniors’ event which was meant for players of over 40 years of age was dominated by Yousuf, who had won the world amateur title in Johannesburg in 1994 and Asian championship in Karachi in 1998.

Yousuf, earlier, in the semi-finals, routed India’s Devendra Joshi 58-34, 75-0, 55-66, 51-37.

“I am very happy to win the title for my country. I wait for it for 12 years,” Yousuf expressed his happiness on a local TV channel.

“This victory will boost our Asian Games campaign,” he added.

Meanwhile, Naveen Perwani, featuring in the main event of the competition, went down fighting against Attahist Mahatti of Thailand in the quarter-final.

Naveen, who was leading 3-2 at one stage lost by 66-59, 12-69, 04-75, 60-48, 59-54, 10-95, 31-57, 63-50, 02-95, 57-42, 1-69.

The Pakistan team which also comprises Khurram Agha is due to return home on Friday morning and will be given a warm welcome.—APP
