MONTE CARLO (Monaco), Nov 15: Track and field's world governing body is increasing its drug-testing program for 2007.

The council of the International Association of Athletics Federations said on Wednesday it will conduct 2,200 to 2,300 out-of-competition tests and 1,300 to 1,400 in-competition controls.

In 2006, the IAAF and its doping-control agencies carried out 1,222 in-competition tests and 1,085 out-of-competition checks. Of those, 30 doping violations were reported.

On other issues, the council awarded the 2008 World Cross Country Championships to Edinburgh. The Scottish capital was the only candidate. The 2007 championships will be held in Nairobi, Kenya.

The IAAF also selected Bressanone, Italy, to stage the 2009 World Youth Championships.

The Helsinki GP meet, which was part of the World Athletics Tour in 2006, was canceled for next year. No reason was given.

Three other one-day meets _ New York; Carson, California; and Rethymno, Greece _ have applied to join the tour. The council said it will study the bids and make a decision by the end of the year.—AP
