PESHAWAR, Nov 15: The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission plans to set up six more nuclear medicine centres in the country, said PAEC director-general Dr Saeeda Asghar on Tuesday.

There are13 medical facilities operating in the country under the PAEC and the new centres will be set up in Gujranwala, Bannu, Swat, Gilgit, Dera Ismail Khan and Nawabshah.

"These medical centres are already offering treatment and diagnostic facilities to cancer patients and soon they will acquire the facilities of MRI and CT Scan," said Dr Asghar while addressing the 14th National Radiology Conference organised by the Pakistan Radiological Society.

She said plans had also been made to establish fully-fledged radiology departments at these centres.Dr Mohammad Ayub Khan, director of the Institute of Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine (IRNM), Peshawar, said that the field of radiology had undergone sea-change and now treatment of cancer patients had become increasingly possible.

Dr Mohammad Nawaz, assistant professor at the radiology department of the Khyber Teaching Hospital, and Dr Akifullah Khan also spoke.—Correspondent
