Muqam says PML not to accept Hasba bill

PESHAWAR, Nov 13: Federal Political Affairs Minister Amir Muqam has described the Hasba bill adopted by the NWFP assembly as a political gimmick by the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) to deceive the masses and buttress its sagging image for the next elections.

Commenting on the passage of the controversial bill, the minister said the law had nothing to do with Islamisation of society and it would not serve any purpose for solving the problems of the common man.

Mr Muqam, who is also provincial president of the Pakistan Muslim League, said that by passing the Hasba bill the MMA had made an attempt to create a parallel police force and curtail the power of judiciary.

He apprehended that the bill would open the floodgates of corruption and misuse of power by the MMA workers.

He said that creating a large number of jobs for political workers at the expense of the common man would place a heavy burden on financial resources of the province.

The minister said the PML would never accept the ‘unconstitutional’ bill “which is bound to be rejected by people”.

He said if the MMA is so serious about enforcing the Islamic laws, it should focus its attention on the Shariah bill already passed by the provincial assembly.

ROAD PROJECTS: Earlier, presiding over a meeting of the National Highway Authority in Islamabad, the minister said the government was committed to alleviating poverty and sense of deprivation among the people of the NWFP.

He said various projects were being executed in the province to provide basic facilities to people.

Calling for early completion of road projects, he said: “It will not only facilitate the smooth flow of traffic on the difficult terrains of the province but also meet the longstanding demands of people.”

The NHA representatives said that under N-45 two projects out of six had been completed. Work on Shergarh-Dargai road, Dargai-Chakdara project, Timergara-Akhagram highway, North access roads and Lowari rail tunnel project is in progress, they added.

The minister appreciated the progress achieved on the Islamabad-Peshawar M-1 project.

The NHA officials said that the Dera Ismail Khan-Mughalpura road would be completed in four months.

Other projects to be completed are Mansehra-Naran-Jharkand-Chilas road, Thaakot bridge and Mansehra-Shazeen road.—APP
