KARACHI: World Fisheries Day on 21st

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 13: World Fisheries Day is being observed on Nov 21 to highlight the problems being faced by fisherman communities and the threats their livelihood is exposed to. Rallies, demonstrations and meetings will be held across Pakistan, like other parts of the world, to mark the occasion.

The Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) has planned a protest march from Regal Chowk to Karachi Press Club to express solidarity with fisherman communities around the world.

Meanwhile, the PFF on Monday continued its protest campaign against allotment of two islands off the Karachi coast, namely Bundal and Buddu, to a foreign firm for a mega project.

Joined in by several other organisations, it organised a boat rally on Sunday depicting unity of the fisherman community on the islands issue.

The rally started from Hazrat Yusuf Shah Mazar and terminated at the Bundal island, where the participants were addressed by PFF chief Mohammad Ali Shah, community leader Shafi Mohammad Jamot and others.

They criticised the federal government’s policy of, what they described as, usurping the resources of the provinces and allotting Sindh’s land to foreigners without the consent of the local people and their representatives.
