Toru Khan breaks record to claim feature event

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Nov 12: Huzaifa Shoaib's three-year-old bay colt, Toru Khan, produced a record-breaking performance to win the Saif Telecom Cup run over 1600m during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

The colt from Tora Bora out-of-Best Malan, Toru Khan, beat his half brother Tuman Khan by about six lengths easily. Lucky Murad and Swing came staggering far behind to complete the board among seven starters.

Jockey Aamir Parvez rode the winner trained by Haji Ghulam Sarwar in this seventh and last race of the day.

Earlier two year-old filly, Brave Act, came with a strong run in the closing stages to land the supporting event, a term race for two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies run over the sprinting distance of 1000m.

Owned by Sohrab Khan and ridden by jockey Salah-ud-Din II, Brave Act defeated chestnut colt, Lucifer by about three lengths. The colt, Lucifer, donned the orange-green silks of Lahore Race Club (LRC) chairman Tariq Aziz and was piloted by Aamir Parvez.Scarlet O, Hara and Mubasherah completed the frame among a dozen finely bred colts and fillies in the third race of the day's card.

Later in the sixth race dark-bay filly, Top Cat, managed to beat chestnut filly, Trace Kim by a neck in a thrilling finish in the Saif Telecom Plate for class IV division II contested over 1600m.

Top Cat was given a splendid ride by Aamir Parvez while Trace Kim was very carelessly ridden by jockey M. Hanif. Trace Kim took a slow start and at two occasions during the race, Hanif failed to give a clear run, lastly in the straight and had to take the filly outside the front-runner and lost the race by a narrow margin of a neck.

The fury of LRC stewards fell on the odds-on favourite mare, Flying Fury and her trainer, when she failed to figure on the board in the second race. Flying Fury was installed a firm favourite but she ran contrarily during the race. Her entries were stopped in races for three months and trainer Alim-ud-Din fined rupees ten thousand for running the mare in unfit condition.

After a long time it turned out a happy Sunday for the punters, who reaped rich harvest on a partly cloudy day when five well-backed winners obliged them in a card of eight races.

At long last the former hockey legend Munir Dar went home happily when his dream to score a win came true. Dar's four-year-old colt Dream Comes True won the second race defeating Miss Rough Rough by three-fourth of a length to give him a winner after a long time. His victory came as a surprise to Pakistan's former hockey skipper, who is a good appraiser of horses performance.

Jockey Aamir Parvez excelled among riders. He rode home three winners, Tornado, Top Cat and Toru Khan . Trainer Amjad Ali sent out two winners, Brave Act and Top Cat.
