Toru Khan poised to win feature event

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Nov 11: A ticklish card of seven events featuring the Saif Telecom Cup to be gone over 1600m awaits race-goers when the 11th Lahore Winter Meeting gets under way at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Of the seven acceptors left-in after the final scratchings, two three-year-old colts Toru Khan and Tuman Khan, appear to be the real genuine chances for the event, a class IV division I handicap race.

The statistics of past performances out rightly favour Toru Khan to win by a narrow margin because he had staged two incredible performances to win the Bhalwal Plate for class IV and then the V. P. O Cup on his previous running. Moreover, Toru Khan in his dozen outings to date had won seven times and placed once, a feat achieved rarely by any other runner of this age group. His immediate rival, Tuman Khan has won rour races and placed twice in his total ten outing. Among other runners, the four-year-old colt, Swing is good as challenger to both Toru Khan and Tuman Khan. The first named is owned by Huzaifa Shoaib while Tuman Khan runs in the silks of Islamabad based UAE diplomat, Ali Mohammad Al-Shamsi. Both the colts are from Tora Bora and trained by Haji Ghulam Sarwar

The main supporting event, the Kaghan Plate, a term race for two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies to be contested over the sprinting distance of 1000 m. Of a dozen probable runners four, two colts and as many fillies, come into reckoning. They are; Lucifer, Headingley, Gujrat Princess and Brave Act.

Lucifer, Headingley , sons of English Sire, Bletch Dancer are owned by the Lahore Race Club (LRC) chairman Tariq Aziz and tracking well. The track work of the fillies, Gujrat Princess and Brave Act is also impressive. Which way the race will go is anybody's guess. The race-goers opinions are divided because the result of two-year-olds races is mostly unpredictable. On bloodline Headingley should win and the other three form the vanguard of challengers including Lucifer, the second progeny of Bletch Dancer, who was fast on the track and he has been quick out of the gate as a stallion. His progeny, Hellen Of Troy, enthralled race-goers registering a facile win, a fortnight back.

In all 65, probable runners are to line up for the seven races carded for Sunday afternoon. Two events are to be contested over 900 metres, one 1000 metres, two 1300 metres and two 1600 metres. The first race will start at 12.30pm.

Meanwhile the LRC has ordered all riders racing at Lahore to get their riding weight checked in the scale room on Nov 13, 14 and 15 during 9.00am to 4.00pm daily Rider failing to comply with the order will be barred from taking part in races. In has come into the notice of the authorities that some riders carry either over or less weight than that declared in connivance with the and scale room staff in violation of the Rules of Racing.

In another notification horse-owners, trainers and agents have been informed to submit entries of their horses for the participation in the Nursery Cup, the 2000 Guineas Of Pakistan and the Quaid-i-Azam Gold Cup 2006 by Nov 20, which is the last date to deposit entries for the probable runners.
