NAPWD office ransacked

HUNZA, Nov 11: The Northern Areas Power and Works Department office at Garelth Hunza was attacked by a group of people on Friday, who damaged the property including computers.

Witnesses said that a group of more than 400 people from Sumayar Nagar came in vehicles and beat the guard before entering the office. The mob smashed computers and windowpanes and before leaving the office, stole entire record of the office and the computers.

The local people said that a convoy of more than 20 vehicles entered the area, leaving the impression of a wedding party, and gathered at the PWD offices.

It was later revealed that this was a repercussion of a disqualified tender of a bridge on Nagar River which was supposed to link Sumayar to Nagar via Ganish.

PWD sources said that the bridge tender had been approved twice but due to some political pressure from Nagar Proper it had been cancelled and instead a road from Ganish to Nagar Proper had been approved.

An FIR has been lodged and a police party sent to Sumayar for arrests.
