Ton-up Bravo sizzles in drawn match

By Mohammad Yaqoob

LAHORE, Nov 9: A fine century by middle-order batsman Dwayne Bravo was the highlight of the West Indies innings on the second day of their practice match against PCB Patron's XI which ended in a draw at the Bagh-i-Jinnah Stadium here on Thursday.

Right-handed batsman Bravo retired out after making a splendid 108, which was studded with 18 fours and two sixes in a stay of 114 minutes.

West Indies had reached 279 for five in 63.3 overs when umpires Nadeem Ghauri and Zameer Haider called off the match.

The visitors began their innings after Patron's XI skipper Asim Kamal declared his side's innings at the overnight total of 305-4.

Bravo with Lendl Simmons (40) added 120 for the fourth-wicket in 89 minutes, before left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman bowled Simmons who hit six fours in his knock.

Earlier, openers Darren Ganga (42) and Runako Morton (21) launched the innings with a brisk partnership of 50.

Medium-pacer Shahid Nazir made the first breakthrough when he clean bowled Morton. Ganga then fell to the other right-arm paceman Mohammad Irshad when he had him caught at first slip by Misbah-ul-Haq.

Young medium-pacer Akhtar Ayub, a member of the Pakistan Under-19 World Cup-winning squad, reduced the visitors to 3-122 when he had Ramnaresh Sarwan caught by wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed for 29.

Bravo later told reporters that he got invaluable batting practice before the start of the three-Test series from Saturday in Lahore. The all-rounder praised Patron's XI left-arm paceman Najaf Shah for troubling all batsmen on an unhelpful pitch.

To a question as to why West Indies skipper Brian Lara did not bat, Bravo said legendary batsman preferred to give opportunities to the youngsters to get practice before the Test series.

Asim, meanwhile, said that since it had already been agreed that each team would bat for a day, he had to declare his team's innings at the start of the last day.
