PCB names appeal panel
LAHORE, Nov 6: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday formed a three-man anti-doping appeal committee to review the cases of banned Test fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Shoaib Akhtar.
The committee will be headed by former chief justice of Sindh High Court, and former Governor of Sindh Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim and includes ex-Test off-spinner Hasib Ahsan and sports medicine expert Dr Danish Zaheer.
Asif, who has been banned for a year after being found guilty of using banned substance nandrolone, submitted his appeal to the PCB on Monday. But Shoaib, banned for two years for the same offence by the PCB anti-doping commission, headed by Barrister Shahid Hamid on Nov 1, is yet to appeal against the verdict.
The PCB officially announced that Asif had requested that his case be reviewed.
“Notification for intent to appeal has been received by Pakistan Cricket Board Anti-Doping Control Officer Dr Sohail Saleem at 10am today from Mohammad Asif, one of the two cricketers who were banned by an independent anti-doping commission on Nov 1, 2006 for drug abuse and following which the three-member appeal committee has been formed,” PCB Director Communication Dr Ahsan Hameed Malik said.
He said all the members of the committee were renowned in their respective profession.
Dr Danish is based in Brunei.
Dr Sohail confirmed that Asif's appeal carried weight and had been accepted for review.
“Asif raised some new points and on that basis the appeal has been accepted.”
Dr Ahsan said that the members of the committee would coordinate with each other in next couple of days to set a date for the first meeting.
