‘MMA can go to any extent’

LAHORE, Nov 6: MMA president and Jamaat-i-Islami amir Qazi Hussain Ahmad on Monday said the opposition was ready to tender resignations if that could bring the dictatorship down.

Talking to newsmen at the end of the three-day JI shoora, he said that the real challenge was a permanent end to military dictatorship.

“But it will not be possible till people throw the military dictator out after a peaceful mass movement. In order to achieve that end, the entire opposition should get together and mull various options as to how we can rid the country of military rule.”

The JI leader warned that the MMA could go to any extent if the government tried to bulldoze the select committee women protection bill in the National Assembly on Nov 10.

Meanwhile, the central council of JI, in its resolutions after a three-day meeting, termed the women’s protection bill an anti-religion enactment seeking to appease the US. “Various amendments being made in the name of women are in line with the US dictates, which are available on the State Department website also. The US foreign office had demanded scraping of the Islamic laws on its website six months ago.”

The shoora was of the view that denial of economic and political justice had always been the root cause of hatred and biases which had affected peaceful co-existence in the past.

The resolution believed that immediate cessation of army operation, production of political detainees and release of innocent people could make the situation conducive for talks. —Staff Reporter
