Asif to submit appeal today

LAHORE, Nov 5: Banned paceman Mohammad Asif will submit his appeal to the Pakistan Cricket Board on Monday against the one-year sentence imposed on him by the board's anti-doping commission.

The commission also slapped two-year ban on world fastest bowler Shoaib Akhtar for the same offence.

A PCB spokesman told Dawn that Asif contacted the PCB Anti-doping officer Dr Sohail Saleem and informed him that he would lodge the appeal against the ban on Monday.

The spokesman said he had no information whether Shoaib was also going to appeal against the verdict.

He said after receiving the appeal, the PCB would form a three-member committee to review the case.

Former Justice Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim and former Test off-spinner Hasib Ahsan are likely to be included in the committee.

Though the names of both men were published in newspapers it was not the official announcement of the PCB, the spokesman said.

“As the PCB chairman has to announce the appeal committee the same day after receiving the appeal, he may be in negotiation with certain people including Justice Fakharuddin and Mr Hasib,” the spokesman said.
