KARACHI, Nov 5: The city’s twice elected mayor Abdul Sattar Afghani, who died here on Saturday, was laid to rest in Mewashah Graveyard on Sunday.
Mr Afghani, a Jamaat-i-Islami leader, was a sitting member of the National Assembly.
He had been admitted to the Aga Khan University Hospital where he remained under treatment for about a week before he breathed his last. His death was caused by kidney failure.
Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal President Qazi Hussain Ahmed, who is also Amir of the Jamaat-i-Islami, visited the late Afghani’s house in Moosa Lane, Lyari, and offered his condolences to the bereaved family. Later, he led the funeral prayers performed in Kakri Ground.
On the occasion, Qazi Hussain briefly spoke to the mourners to pay glowing tributes to person and services of the late city father.
He observed: “Despite keeping the top slot of the city administration for some eight years, he never indulged in corruption or nepotism. Till his death, he lived in the same small house from where he had started his political career.” He said the people like Mr Afghani had always remained a source of inspiration for many who did not like power politics.
A large number of people from all walks of life were present at the funeral of the former mayor.
