PESHAWAR, Nov 2: Provincial Food Minister Fazle Rabbani has informed the NWFP assembly that the government has enhanced the support price for sugarcane to Rs65 per 40 kgs.
He was responding to a point of order raised by Abdul Akbar Khan, parliamentary leader of the PPP in the NWFP Assembly.
The MPA had raised the point that the support price for sugarcane had not been increased despite 100 per cent increase in the price of sugar.
He said farmers had concern over the delay and demanded of the government to fix sugarcane price at Rs100 per 40-kilogramme.
Supporting his viewpoint, another member Hafiz-ullah Alizai said farmers were facing losses due to delay in start of crushing season by mill owners.
Responding to their questions, the Provincial minister said the government had fixed the support price at Rs65 per 40 kgs but wanted to further increase it.
He said the provincial government had waived taxes on gur ghani (cane crushers).—APP
