KARACHI, Nov 2: The academic session for MBBS first year will commence from Monday at the affiliated medical colleges of the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) following the standard admission process comprising entry tests and display of the merit list.

The new admissions include 300 students each at the Dow and Sindh medical colleges, selected on merit basis; 80 of the new admissions pertain to self finance; 30 on reciprocal basis - they are students admitted to the Liaquat University of Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro.

Speaking at a press conference here on Thursday, the DUHS vice-chancellor, Prof Masood Hameed Khan, strongly dispelled the impression being created with regard to any discrepancies in the entry test.

As many as 3,218 candidates were said to have appeared in the entry tests conducted on October 8, in accordance with the PMDC requirement.

78 of these candidates posted their objections while three of these objections were found valid and the mistake was immediately rectified, the vice-chancellor said mentioning that two of the three students were granted admissions as they had fulfilled the required merit criterion.

One of the complainant could not be accommodated, despite the fact that his marks too were recounted and raised as justified but since could not meet the required merit criterion hence could not get admission, he elaborated.

“A consolidated merit minimum was registered to come to 75 per cent for admission to the Sindh Medical College and 83 per cent to the Dow Medical College,” he said answering a question.

Maintaining that no major flaw can be cited in the MCQs comprising 100 questions put before the students, the vice-chancellor stressed that all questions were properly structured; however, error did occur in the key linked to available options for four questions.

“This was but rectified without any delay and no candidate was denied the due justice,” Prof Khan said. —APP
