KARACHI, Nov 1: The Pakistan Golf Federation (PGF) received a big boost when Royal and Ancient (R & A), the world governing body of the game, sanctioned an annual grant of 10,000 Pounds Sterling to it for three years aimed at creating a base of golf teachers who can groom juniors at grassroots level.

The deal was struck after PGF secretary, Taimur Hassan, convinced Duncan Wier, director international development, R & A, about the proposed academy during the World Amateur Golf Team Championship for Eisen Hover Trophy at Cape Town, South Africa, last week.

‘It’s a big achievement and will go a long way in promoting the game in the country in the days to come,’ Taimur told Dawn on Wednesday.

He said PGF was laying emphasis to create teaching faculty which is the first step for the uplift of sport in the country.

‘We plan to invite international golf teachers to Pakistan at least every three months to teach our faculty with resource material who can further sharp the skills of young golfers,’ he said.

Comparing government-run educational institutions with LUMS he said it’s the faculty that makes the difference and produce bright students.

Meanwhile, Pakistan finished 42nd among 70 nations in the 72-Hole World Amateur Golf Team Championship. The Netherlands won the world title followed by Canada and US. Pakistan team which returned early Wednesday morning consist of Ali Hai, Vaqas Ahmed and Mohammad Safdar. Col. Zulfiqar Rana accompanied the team as manager.
