CHAKWAL, Nov 1: The Punjab government on Wednesday transferred all the 22 doctors of the District Headquarters Hospital Chakwal and directed them to report to the health secretariat, Lahore.
The decision was taken in pursuant to the Supreme Court directive to transfer the doctors for observing a strike against the arrest of their colleague involved in the death of a child due to negligence.
The apex court had issued the directive while hearing a suo motu notice of the death of three children in the hospital due to negligence of doctors. An inquiry report by the District and Sessions Judge, Syed Ikhlaq Ahmad confirmed that the medical superintendent, his deputy and child specialist Dr Mohammad Aamir were responsible for the death of one of the children.
The city police Chakwal registered a case against Dr Aamir and arrested him. On this, all the doctors of the district went on a three-day strike and demanded immediate release of Dr Aamir.
Hearing the case, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhary and Justice Mohammad Nawaz Abbasi termed the strike not only illegal but also a contempt of court. The court ordered transfer of all the government doctors who participated in the strike.
Earlier, MS of the hospital Dr Tauqir Minhas and DMS Dr Saadat Ali were made OSD.
The doctors who have been transferred include Afzal Bhatti, Mohammad Kibria, Tariq Awan, Mushtaq Bhatti, Maqsood Minhas, Raja Mehdi Hassan, Zafar Iqbal, Shakeel Mughal, Mohammad Yousaf, Bashir Ahmad, Aurang Zaib, Mehboob Ahmad, Khalid Azadar, Mohammad Farhat, Iqrar Shah, Abida Yasmin, Farrah, Noureen Mumtaz and Rizwana Yasmin. Dr Mohammad Hussain Naqvi has already assumed the charge of MS of the District Headquarters Hospital.—PPI
