Ex-armyman arrested for beating wife

RAWALPINDI, Nov 1: A retired army officer, who turned out to be a proclaimed offender (PO), was arrested by the Industrial Area police on Wednesday for torturing his wife, and sent him to Adiala jail, police said.

Industrial Area DSP Jameel Hashmir, who is leading the investigation into the case, said that the second wife of Azhar Mehmood, a captain retired, lodged a complaint with the police saying that she was tortured by her husband, which caused injuries to her.

The DSP said, Azhar Mehmood, who married a Lahore-based woman against her parents will, was wanted by the Lahore police in connection with the kidnapping of a woman, which was lodged by her parents, and he was declared proclaimed offender.

COP ATTACKED: A handful of villagers reportedly attacked a policeman, who was taking away their man after recovering 128 grams of charas from him, and got him freed and then escaped in Rawat on Tuesday, police said.

Mukhtar Ahmed, ASI of Rawat station complained that he was shifting Ikhlaq Hussain to police station after recovering 128 grams of Charas when a handful of villagers led by Ikhlaq’s brother intercepted him and attacked. He said the attackers stoned him and got their man freed from his custody and escaped. The police have registered a case and hunting for the escapees.—Staff Reporter
