KARACHI: Governor for effective steps against dengue


KARACHI, Oct 31: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has directed the administrations of the local governments to take effective measures for cleanliness in their respective areas for protection against the dengue virus.

Speaking at a meeting of the town nazims at the Governor’s House on Tuesday, he said a coordinated strategy be chalked out for cleanliness before Eidul Azha.

Dr Ibad called for utmost attention towards protection against the dengue virus and mosquitoes.

He pointed out that in an intense state the dengue virus took the shape of Congo virus which resulted into hemorrhagic fever.

The governor was of the view that in such a situation there was a need to work with devotion and in a continuous manner.

He appreciated the spray being carried out by the city government and the towns thrice a day and said that this process be made effective and meaningful with the coordination of the people.

Dr Ibad directed the setting up of centres in every town with toll-free telephone numbers whereby people could contact officials regarding the spray.

He emphasised the need for creating awareness among the masses and also asked the ulema that in their sermons and contact with the people they help spread necessary information.

The governor said that there should also be spray in educational institutions, mosques and seminaries.

He stressed that care be taken that there wes no breeding of mosquitoes in the open spaces.

He further directed that the on-going projects in the towns be completed at the earliest.

He said that as for cleanliness in the towns, the arrangements for outsourcing be improved.

The governor was of the view that there was need for a coordinated strategy for cleanliness before Eidul Azha.

“For Eid ul Azha centres be set up for slaughtering sacrificial animals,” he said.

Dr Ibad also directed the relevant town nazims to speed up the provision of right of way for the construction of the Lyari Expressway and that the work to this effect be completed according to a timetable.He appreciated the provision of assistance to police and Rangers by the towns during Ramazan and on the occasion of Eidul Fitr.

The governor pointed out that with the participation of community the security and traffic arrangements were made in a better way.

Sindh Minister for Local government Muhammad Hussain, Adviser on Home Affairs Wasim Akhtar, Chief Secretary Fazalur Rehman, Nazim of Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal, Director-General of Rangers Maj-Gen Javed Zia, IG Jehangir Mirza, CCPO Niaz Siddiqui and other officials were also present on the occasion.

EFFLUENT TREATMENT: Sindh Governor Ishratul Ibad on Tuesday said that the enforcement of a law showed the commitment of the government to a cause and it also helped build the government’s image.

“This is high time to implement the environmental protection laws,” he said while visiting the combined Effluent Treatment Plant in the Korangi Industrial Area.

The governor was accompanied by Tariq Ikram, chairman of the EPB, Provincial Minster for Environment and Alternate Energy Dr. Saghir Ahmed, City Nazim Mustafa Kamal, Principal Secretary Salim Khan and Zasir Hayat, the secretary for industries.

The governor was told that the effluent plant was built with combined funding of the Export Development Fund and the Pakistan Tanneries Association at a cost of Rs490 million in 10 years.

Built as per the international standards, the plant is the first of its kind in Pakistan. The Sindh government has provided the land.

The plant is self-sustainable and the overhead cost will be borne by the members of the Association.

The governor lauded the efforts of the Pakistan Tanneries Association and assured of full cooperation of the government of Sindh in its efforts.

He announced the waiver of Rs9 million dues as a land cost. He also directed the city nazim to build internal roads.

Besides, he asked the town nazim to remove all encroachments.—APP
