First Look runs away with Eid Cup

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Oct 29: Hot Favourite colt, First Look, came with a strong run in the closing stages to win the Eid Cup during the post-Eidul Fitr Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

The bay colt beat bay filly Baker's Gal by three-fourth of a length. Red-roan colt Jut Bahadur stayed on gamely to take third place among eight runners left in the field after the withdrawal of Nosha from the event run over 1200m sprinting distance.

A race later Trace Hit put up a fine performance under Shahid Rehman to claim the Gujrat Cup contested over 1800m.

The chestnut filly, Trace Hit took up the running right from the start and set a hot pace.

After the final bend it looked like the race was her's. All of a sudden long chaser River Dancer challenged her in a half-hearted attempt but the filly managed to pass the winning post three-fourth length ahead of him.

Earlier in the third race Mian Maahir Ahmad's colt Fido Dido outclassed his seven rivals to win the Class IV division III handicap race contested over 1200m. He beat favourite Charismatic by six lengths.

Only two firm favourites obliged punters in a card of six races. They were First Look and Trace Hit. Jockey M. Hanif and trainer Haji Ghulam Sarwar shared the racing honours of the day. Hanif brought in a brace of winners through Zanjeer and Fido Dido while Haji saddled Zanjeer, First Look and Trace Hit belonging to Khawaja's stable.

Meanwhile the Lahore Race Club stewards at a meeting presided over by LRC chairman Tariq Aziz decided to hold the next winter meeting on Saturday instead of Sunday. The change in the programme has been necessitated in view of the Champions Trophy cricket final being played in India on Sunday which is likely to have adverse effect on attendance at the club.
