LAHORE, Oct 29: The Punjab Anti-Narcotics Force on Sunday arrested four people at the Wagah border who had managed to cross over to the Indian side with heroin, it is learnt.
Earlier, the force had on Oct 26 rounded up nine people who were carrying eight kilogram heroin among a batch of 63 people heading towards India for the ICC Champions Trophy. They were held just before they could cross the border.
The nine people included seven women who had hidden the heroin in their undergarments.
Those arrested on Sunday included two women who were returning from India, sources told Dawn, and identified them as Shahida Irshad, Yusra Irshad, Asif Ali and Muhammad Altaf.
Sources said the ANF made the latest arrests on information provided by those already in its custody. “This is being treated as a high-profile case because it is very unusual to smuggle the drugs through the Wagah border,” they said.
They said the suspects in the ANF custody had revealed the names of the four people who managed to cross over to India. “We are working to trace connections between the arrested people and their aides in India,” a senior ANF official said on the request of anonymity.
Those arrested on Oct 26 were Zeenat Anjum and her daughters Aisha and Yasmin, Azra Perveen and her son Mohsin, Faisal and Mahmooda Begum of Lahore, and Kausar and Mukhtaran Bibi of Faisalabad.
Further investigation is under way.
