KARACHI: City govt starts third round of fumigation

KARACHI, Oct 29: City Nazim Mustafa Kamal has said that the city government will carry out fumigation thrice a day.

While talking to newsmen during his visit to various union councils of Jamshed Town on Sunday evening to inspect the ongoing fumigation drive, he said that spray would also be conducted at afternoon in addition to that being done at dawn and dusk from Monday onwards.

Mustafa Kamal said that two rounds of spray in all the towns had been completed and now third one had been started.

“At the moment insecticides worth Rs200 million are available in store from which provisions are being made to the towns and union councils. If needed more quantity of insecticides will be purchased,” the nazim said.

He said that the city government had imported 54 spray machines and distributed among the towns at the time when there was no outbreak of dengue fever. Besides, the city government had another 30 machines thus all the 84 machines were now being used for fumigation, he added.

“We are not only trying to ward off the present threat of viral infections but also planning for the coming years and the ongoing spray campaign will be continued for the whole next year,” he said adding that fumigation would continue till the dengue fever virus is eliminated.

According to him, 30 cases were found positive out of 121 dengue tests at two laboratories of the city government. He said that private hospitals had been asked not to charge any fee from the dengue fever patients, as the city government was making payments within 24 hours after receiving bills.

Meanwhile, giving an interview to a private television channel, the nazim said that the process of fast track development initiated by the present city government would continue and gradually transform the city’s outlook in terms of infrastructure.

“The city will leave behind others in the race of development with availability of all basic facilities to citizens,” he remarked.

The city government has created a record by launching the process of development works on an accelerated pace. A single project used to take years to complete but now dozens of mega projects would see the day of completion within months, he said.

For the first time, attention was paid towards water and sewerage issues of the city which helped improve the situation but plenty of work was yet to be done, Mustafa Kamal pointed out adding that the existing system is 59 years old and would take some time to be put back in order.

He said that planning of water and sewerage project was underway and soon a formal announcement would be made in this regard.
