20,000 kites, twine seized; two held: Godown raided

LAHORE, Oct 22: Tibbi City police have seized 20,000 kites and 2,000 rolls of twine from a godown and arrested two people for violating the kite-flying act.

This was stated at a meeting of the operations wing, which met with DIG (operations) Aamir Zulfikar Khan in the chair here on Sunday.

The DIG constituted three monitoring squads led by SPs of headquarters, security and Mujahid wings to implement the kite-flying ban in letter and spirit and prevent the practice during Eidul Fitr holidays.

He warned that Section 109 of the act would be implemented and the owners of houses from where kites would be flown would also be taken to task.

The meeting decided that pamphlets against the ban would be distributed in different parts of the city on Monday so that the people, especially youth, could be informed of the hazards of kite flying.

All SPs were directed to seek cooperation from the mohallah committees in every union council of their respective areas in order to ensure ban on the kite flying.

They were asked to prevent manufacturing and selling of kites and strings and the people involved in the business must be taken to task.

The officials were ordered to submit daily report of each police station regarding ban on kite flying.

The DIG asked the SPOs and SHOs to use megaphones to inform people of the ban.

ARRESTS: City Raiwind, North Cantonment and South Cantonment police claimed on Sunday to have arrested 10 members of three gangs along with looted valuables and illegal weapons.

The accused confessed to committing 86 crimes during preliminary interrogation.

A special team, led by the City Raiwind SPO, arrested Niaz alias Naji, Akram, Imran, Ejaz Masih, Nadeem Masih and Jan Masih of Naji gang.

Six members of the gang, Muhammad Arshad, Siddique, Kali, Shabbir, Nadeem and Masto Kararia, however, managed to escape.

The police recovered 10 cell phones, three television sets, 15 kgs of copper, 10 kgs of silver cable, iron rods and three bicycles besides illegal weapons.

Another team, headed by the North Cantonment SPO, nabbed ringleader Iftikhar of Acha car lifters’ gang when he was driving a stolen car to the tribal areas.

Three of his accomplices, Sameer Khan, Miraj and Riaz Khan, are still at large.

The police recovered the car worth Rs1 million and illegal weapons from his possession.

The third team, led by the South Cantonment SPO, apprehended Imran alias Mana, Sabir and Muhammad Younas of Mana gang and recovered 12 cell phones, jewellery and illegal weapons from their possession.

Three of the gang members, Faisal, Safdar and Zulfikar, could not be arrested. gang busted: The Lytton Road police claimed on Sunday to have busted a four-member gang of robbers.

A Lytton Road police arrested Zameer Qamar alias Poma, Muhammad Asif, Muhammad Boota and Muhammad Afzal alias Kali when they were planning a robbery at Chauburji Park.
