KARACHI: Serial killers remanded


KARACHI, Oct 21: Two alleged serial killers, involved in killing cases of police and ranger personnel, were remanded to police custody till Oct 27.

Kamran Yousuf, 29, and Mohammad Farhan, 20, were produced before the administrative judge of anti-terrorism courts in Karachi, Justice Khliji Arif Hussain of Sindh High Court for obtaining their remand in as many as nine murder cases.

Three cases were lodged against them in limits of Saudabad police station in which police accused them of killing ranger personnel Momi Khan and Ghulam Abbas on Sept 1, police sub-inspector Ijaz Hussain on June 23, constable Mohammad Wakeel and Syed Zahid on Sept 28.

They are charged with killing police head constable Ghulam Ghous, Mohammad Ishaque and M. Ali in October in the limits of Shah Latif Town police station while in three cases lodged against them in the limits of Airport police station, police alleged they killed sub-inspector Mohammad Nadeem Bangash on June 23, PC Mohammad Imran on Sept 27, besides killing Meraj and injuring Rehan during resistance in mobile phone snatching bid on June 27.

Kamran was also booked in murder case of police constable Mohammad Ashraf on June 30 in he limits of Sharea Faisal police station. One of their accomplice Farhan alias Choto was still at large.

The AJ, granting the remand requests, sent them to police custody till Oct 27 and directed the investigation officers to produce them on the next date of hearing.

LJ activist acquited: The Sindh High Court on Saturday, recalling its order, acquitted one activist of banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi of sectarian killing charge but maintained the death sentence of the co-accused.

Ataullah and Mohammad Azam were sentenced to death by an anti-terrorism court in Karachi for killing religious leader Syed Athar Hussain Rizvi on May 3, 2001 in Korangi area Karachi.

The court has recalled its previous order in which it dismissed the appeal of appellants and upheld their conviction, Attaullah's counsel Mushtaq Ahmed said.

According to recall order, the court has acquitted Attaullah of murder charge and ordered to release him if not involved in other cases but maintained the death sentence of Mohammad Azam, he added.

Appellants preferred appeal against their conviction and prayed the court to set aside the trial court order claiming their innocence against prosecution charge. The reasons of the appeal will be announced later on by the court.

Kidnapping Case: The administrative judge of the anti-terrorism courts in Karachi on Saturday remanded to jail a suspect facing charges of kidnapping his own nephew for ransom, and directed the investigation officer to submit a charge-sheet against him on Oct 30.

Shakeel Ahmed was produced before AJ Justice Khilji Arif Hussain of the Sindh High Court for obtaining permission for his judicial remand. He was arrested by the Sukkhan police on Oct 14 for kidnapping his six-year-old nephew Shahwaiz for ransom.

Police said the accused kidnapped his nephew when he was going to a nearby mosque for learning the Quran and later he demanded Rs25,000 from the family of the victim.

The investigation officer sought permission to send the accused to jail as his confessional statement had been recorded by the judicial magistrate concerned and identification parade was also held.

Sending the accused to jail, the AJ directed the investigation officer to complete investigation of the case and submit a charge-sheet against the accused on the next date of hearing.

Meanwhile, the AJ directed the investigation officer in another kidnapping for ransom case to submit a charge-sheet against three accused on Oct 30.

Ashiq Hussain, Nehal Khan and Ashok Kumar were booked by the Frere police for kidnapping two students, Abdul Lateef and Shahzad, for ransom on June 28.—PPI
