Qazi calls for joint opposition movement

By Ahmed Hassan

ISLAMABAD, Oct 17: Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) president Qazi Hussain Ahmed on Tuesday urged all opposition parties to get united and launch a joint struggle to oust the military-led government.

He said that the MMA would take a decision in the second week of November on the timing of resigning from assemblies and launching of the movement.

Speaking at a news conference held at his residence here, the MMA leader said that people should understand that free and fair elections could not be held under the rule of a president in uniform.

He did not rule out holding meetings with Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif to remove misunderstandings on the question of a grand alliance or a united struggle against the regime.

The MMA chief said army’s credibility was at stake and saying adieu to politics was in its own favour.

The army was defeated after which it was coerced into reaching an agreement in Waziristan, he claimed.

About his pledge, along with Imran Khan, to launch a decisive movement in September even if all parties fail to join them, the MMA president said: “When I assessed the situation I came to the conclusion that such a movement should have the backing of all opposition parties so that our struggle does not go waste.”
