UNITED NATIONS, Oct 17: The UN General Assembly on Monday elected Belgium, Indonesia, Italy and South Africa to serve as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for two-year terms starting on January 1, 2007.
But the General Assembly continues to remain in session as Guatemala and Venezuela continued to battle for the Latin American seat as neither of them obtained two thirds majority votes required during 10 rounds of voting. At the last count, Guatemala with 110 votes led Venezuela which garnered 77 votes.
