Debate on oil prices sought

ISLAMABAD, Oct 17: Opposition members on Tuesday submitted adjournment motions to the National Assembly and Senate secretariats seeking a discussion on the government’s decision that oil prices would not be reduced despite drop in prices in the international market.

The motion, submitted to the National Assembly Secretariat, has been signed by 15 MNAs, and the motion which has been moved in the Senate has signatures of 10 senators belonging to the People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPP), the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N), the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) and the Awami National Party (ANP).

The motions state: “It has been published in newspapers that the government has announced that price will not be reduced although crude oil prices in the international market have been dropped to their waste level in 10 months. The government has stated on the floor of the house while increasing the rates in the oil prices that the rates will be reduced as and when the price in the international market are dropped. It is a matter of public importance and national interest that the government has now denied to reduce the oil prices which has caused grave concern amongst the general public which needs discussion on the floor of the house.”

The motion has been signed by MNAs Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, Sherry Rehman, Chaudhry Manzoor Ahmed, Dr Fehmida Mirza, Fauzia Wahab, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Tehmina Daultana, Imtiaz Safdar Warraich, Khawaja Mohammad Asif, Syed Qurban Ali Shah, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Naheed Khan, Syed Naveed Qamar, Chaudhry Qamaruz Zaman Kaira and Syed Nayyar Hussain Bokhari.

The senators who have put their signatures on the motion are Opposition Leader in the Senate Raza Rabbani, Dr Safdar Ali Abbasi, Rukhsana Zuberi, Dr Abdul Malik, Enver Baig, Sadia Abbasi, Prof Khurshid Ahmed, Ilyas Ahmed Bilour, Dr Babar Awan and Asfandyar Wali.
